I grew up in Mancos. There is always red arrow/ doyle mine. It turns off of the road to echo basin. It is not desert wheeling, but it is a fun up and back over a lot of rockslides and beautiful views. Also, another favorite is Kinnebeck pass going north out of hesperus. Very pretty stuff and a little challenging. I know they have competitions outside of Cortez, but I don't know where.

I’m currently living in-between Montana and New Mexico. I own some property in the Zuni Mountain’s (Near the Cibola National Forest) about 1 hour South of Gallup. Right now I'm in Montana and I miss my green chili..............
Favorite spot?
The trails around Silverton / Ouray / Telluride Colorado!
Nothing extreem (welllllll maybe Poughkeepsie??) but scenic and fun.
If your in the area and want a thrill do BlackBear. You will not regret it.
At home?
The Glade run trail system. Otherwise known as Chokecherry canyon.
North of Farmington NM.

Let me know if you need better detail. These are probably trails mostly known only by locals, I don' think they are in any books. Not real challenging, probably 2 or 3 outa 5, but very scenic and beautiful and within 45 min. From cortez.
