i agree with djlarroc. also check the connection at your starter. and def get the codes. they can be a huge help.
my 2000 xj does the same thing from time to time(with the studder). it looses fuel pressure after sitting for a while, so when i start, i run the key on til i hear the fuel pump turn off. then i turn the key off, then start my jeep.
it doesnt studder when i do it that way.
do note that this indicates a problem...prob a bad fuel pump, or leaking injector.
now as to why your jeep wouldnt start back up, i couldnt tell ya, but i think crash is onto something. check and clean your neutral safety switch.
thats all i have for now.

The "start simple" post had it right.
Check the battery. That would be the first place to start, but if you hit the brake pedal I can foresee an idle air mixture being set incorrectly as well. If it's not idling very well and the extra power use from hitting the brake pedal drops the rpms enough to kill it then there are fuel/spark issues.
Time for a tune up!

I had a weird one this morning, started it at school to leave after class and it stuttered, sputtered and died. Started it back up and it ran perfect the rest of the day. I have been driving it erratically lately, and heard that on the 96s (early OBD2) sometimes the computer will glitch after erratic driving, then reset.
Definitely not your problem as you have a 94 though...

i haven't had another problem with her yet.
but sometimes if i dont drive for a day, it'll have a little trouble starting. i just give it a little gas for a second and then she's fine. that was the first time she actually wouldnt start for me.
