Uugh,
I need some help with my XJ. Steering is sloppy as HELL and gets kind of scary when I am trying to keep up with traffic in construction zones. Pulls all over the place, and 10-20 degrees of steering play.
Anyone have any good shops/mechanics with experience with XJ's? I can probably change the parts out if I knew what the hell exactly was wrong but I would not be averse to having them do the work if they are not going to rape me on price.

Definitely could be the steering box but could also be tie rod ends. Get under there and feel if there is any slop in the steering linkage. If not then it could be just a matter of tightening the box up. There is a jamb nut on top you'll want to loosen while holding the set screw with a hex key. After the nut is loosened you can tighten the set screw (try a quarter turn at a time). This should tighten the steering up. Just don't tighten too much or it will cause binding. Try a little at a time until your happy.
This link has a picture of the jamb nut and screw in question.

Have someone shake the steering wheel while you lay under the front with a flashlight looking at everything. If anything moves that shouldn't, its probably your problem

I'm not to familiar with that area. I have a yard about a mile from my house. It usually has several XJ's in it. (about 10). I do know that on the way to Fo-Co there is a Jeep specific on the east side of I-25. There is also a pretty good one on east Colfax in Aurora. What are you looking for?

I am replacing my inner grill piece on my XJ. It is one of those chrome grills. I tied to paint it black but it doesn't hold up to the weather so I bought one new off J.CWhinty to replace it. If you can't find one it will be available soon.
