had some time to work on the jeep today between school and work. i got the roof rack pulled off to sell (already sold). then i cut off the coil mounts on both sides. once that was finished i started on the lower control arm mounts. now i have always heard that these are a pain in the @$$ to get off. that is an understatement. i took a torch to the passenger side for about a half hour and finally got the one off! didnt have time to get the other one off so i will probably work on it tomorow.

on another note. going to buy some 4x6x3/16 square tube tomorow to make some frame stiffeners.

heres my progress today

So, what's going on with project Battle beast, today?

98CherokeeSport Mar 13, 2010 04:41 PM

not much done today. took the sliders off. was goin to get metal but they closed before i got there so im gonna have to wait til next week. ordered some shackle hangers and dana 60 disc brake brackets from RuffStuff. tomorow going to pick up the axles from my buddies house and picking up a ARB for the front 44.
also tomorow i will start stripping all the undercoating and paint off the front frame rails to get it ready to weld onto

tampaviking Mar 13, 2010 09:35 PM

Where are you getting the metal from.

1987XJ Mar 13, 2010 09:48 PM

iv been told that the unibody is like popcan metal and doesnt hold up to well when welding.

if you know how to do it it isnt bad. that is the only way to enforce the crappy unibody. without it it will crack over time. if you research about unibody reinforcement they are all weld on.

i will also be putting about four bolts through the frame with plate on the inside so it helps it out a little more.

bobby, im getting the metal from Interwest metals aka floyd. its a place in fife

sorry not wanting to steal your thread but how did you do your front bumper. C channel flat front and 90 at the corners and extended the front when you got a winch.

98CherokeeSport Mar 14, 2010 12:22 PM

no. first i bought it from nates 4x4 ;) lol its box not channel. its bent in a few places then cuts back. i added the front winch plate after i got the bumper. i am in the process of cutting down the sides and cutting the stinger off to push the winch back into the gril to get a better approach angle

so just another update.

went and pulled my axles today. these things are beefy! now gonna start cutting all the brackets off and tear them apart and put new balljoints and u joints in them. also picked up my front dana 44 ARB. gonna start reinforcing the unibody hopefully this week. i will post up how that goes. im just going to do a little at a time, just enough to start mounting up the leaf springs.

some pictures from today

Awesome stuff!

i love to watch a project come together

98CherokeeSport Mar 16, 2010 12:56 AM

so today i went and picked up enough material to make a new front cross member and about 2.5 feet of unibody stiffening on each side. also my D60 disc brake brackets and shackle hangers came in the mail. have a good amount of time off this week so i hope to be picking up my front leafs and shackles then getting them all mounted up

98CherokeeSport Mar 16, 2010 04:17 PM

got a lot done today. dont have time to post up pictures cuz i gotta go to work. but i got the new front crossmember mounted and welded up, brakes torn off the dana 44, other LCA mount torched off, cut the grill out to slide the winch back about half a foot, and started cutting on the bumper to move the winch back. will post up pictures tonight
