whats better the dana 44 or the 8.25? what gearing is best for offroad? or on-road for that matter. I'm thinking of replacing my d35 rearend for something bigger. i can get one right now for 75.00 with a d30 front but with money tight and i dont what it to break the first time i got out. so any commets would be sweet, thanks for reading

The D44 is ultimately Better, But the 8.25 is also a great axle, The Dana has more Aftermarket selection, and is stronger, but the 29spline 8.25 with alloys will handle 35"s aswell!

It depends on how much you want to spend and how big you want to build your rig. A Dana 44 is better, but will usually cost 2-3 times as much as an 8.25. If you never plan on running larger than a 33" tire than I would say go with the 8.25 and you should be fine. If you want to run larger tires, or like to go heavy on the skinny pedal you will probably be better off with the Dana 44. Personally, I like to make sure my rig is as good or better than I need it to be so I went for the 44.

The 8.25 doesn't have the aftermarket support of the 44, that said the 8.25 is stronger than the 44 in some respects. True it doesn't have as large axles as the 44, and it doesn't have as large of a ring gear, and it has c-clips, but it does have larger axle tubes and most important it has larger pinon and pinon bearings. I've seen guys running 29 spline 8.25s with 37 MTRs locked and not having breaking issues. ( had superior axles )

Pound for pound in an XJ application the 29 spline 8.25 will work just as good and take just as much abuse as the D44. My big preference of the D44 found in earlier XJs (87-89) is that they are semi-floaters meaning the axle and wheel assembly will stay together even after an axle shaft has broken. The 8.25 will spit the wheel, with the broken shaft, out on the trail leaving you stranded if you have no spares...and if you do have spares you will be pulling the diff. cover to remove the "C" clip to replace the axle shaft. Not a fun repair to have to do on the trail. I got really lucky as I scored my XJ D44 rear axle out of an 87 XJ that I gave $400 for the whole Jeep in running condition.

I'm thinking of replacing my 8.25 with a 1995 or newer explorer 8.8 if I can find it with 4.10 gears. It would cost me about the same as regearing my 8.25 and it is much stronger than the 44 or the 8.25

The reason I was thinking of looking for a 4.10 8.8 is so I wouldn't have to spend the money on replacing the ring and pinon. If I did your axle I would have to buy the brackets needed to mount the 8.8, the spacers to get to the same width, plus the ring and pinon. As far as the limited slip, I'll be installing a locker in which ever diff I go with.
