Yup. A lot of people come here to learn, and everybody was a beginner once. With that said, how many write-ups are out there from beginners, to teach other beginners? That's like going to a class in college, and having a freshman teach the course. Doesn't make a bit of sense.

I hear by state, that I may have once been a newb to mechanics and Jeeps, but never to common-sense.

Bunch of kiddies trying to be e-tough thinking they know it all, and hold themselves to such a higher authority that helping out a newb is somehow beneath them. The tards chiming in throwing insults are what killed this forum..

This has been a growing problem here over the years.. this has led to tech savy members and even Moderators to lose interest and move on.

Dad taught me as a kid.. if I didn't have something nice to say.. just STFU. Some of y'all need to learn this.. even some of you self appointed experts.

So we should just allow everyone to make terrible write up's and give bad advice? That's the only thing I think most of us have a problem with. It doesn't help that bimmer has a bad track record.

Perhaps we could have a mod proof read the write ups before they are published?

I have to agree to a point, a write up that takes that threatens safety, the Jeep, or the willingness of someone interested in doing it themselves don't need to exist. The times I've brought the Jeep in broke down when i was just an oil changer and how much I had to pay even with my discount made me realize why forums like this are good. These things in a shop are $$$$ to fix when doing them at home ain't so bad.

Yes, the comments are extreme but that's from the past experiences and arguments.

I own a 1993 Cherokee Sport 4.0 that I bought 7 years ago. It is my first Jeep, and I am head over heels in love with it. I am not a mechanic, but I do know a screwdriver from a wrench, but have always only tackled "small" jobs, like tune-ups or gas filter replacements. But in the past few years with my Jeep, I've replaced the master cylinder, the water pump, the radiator, the starter, and the alternator (all were original). I had no idea how to do these jobs before I tackled them...but with the help of the Chilton manual, friends that I call, and this forum, I'm able to do them. When I was married, I never even would have popped the hood, because the ex husband did all that stuff. But now that I'm single and on a budget, it's just not always feasible for me to go to a mechanic. Sometimes it's a real b***h being under the hood, but the feeling I get when the job is finished and the Jeep starts and runs is like nothing else in the world. Makes this noob feel pretty darn good!

So that being said, I do appreciate posts like this where someone takes the time to put up photos and describe things step-by-step...in fact, the photos were especially helpful in replacing my valve cover gasket, but I also found the directions to be a bit overwhelming. When I initially posted about replacing my valve cover gasket, it actually took me a few days to screw up the courage (so to speak) to tackle the job just because the step-by-step posted here seemed very huge and complicated...it was "bigger" than any other directions I'd seen for valve cover gasket replacement. Other instructions made the job sound like it would take less than an hour, but this post sounded moreso. So yes, this post was very helpful to this noob, but as others have also pointed out, I have to be honest, it was a bit overwhelming to me as well.

I can appreciate how bad you are at mechanics, BimJeep. Some people just don't got it, but you are learning. But hey, a hobby is a hobby. I have seen people take forever to do things but they are also meticulous for no reasons. Whatever! If you aren't on the clock, who gives a ****. I am happy to see someone understand what is going on under the hood of their vehicle and not just go to O'reillys asking for an oil change.

(I watched a friend go to a parts store in the mountains in girls' flip flops [long story] and ask the guys behind the counter if they could install his headlight for him. he got laughed out)

That said..holy moly 10 hours!

I have to say that I just got done wiping the soda off the monitor. This is funny. I have been working on all my cars from the time I was old enough to hold a wrench to the present. I hate taking my stuff to a mechanic. Just the labor alone is high. I work on my father's cars when he can't, and others stuff when it needs work. I am not ASE, and to me that just means you can get your name on a piece of paper, just like that diploma from college and high school on my wall. I have been a member of many jeep and IH related forums, and the newbies just buying junk and working on it amazes me. Should this particular job take 10 hours?? H E double hockey sticks no. I did a writeup for a head swap that took less time, but because I had never attempted this I had to revert to doing what I knew best. I started with my Haynes manual, and the tools that I felt I needed to do the job. I have worked behind parts counters, and had customers actually ask for me, when the other counter clowns didn't have a clue even about what kind of parts the customer was asking for, let alone applications for said parts. I am in agreement that while there may not have been a writeup about this topic, the search function still works. Heck my wife could have done this job in an hour, not ever having touched an XJs drivetrain before. She works on her own truck, well cause its hers. I only help when she can't get a bolt to break loose. Not knowing the OP from beans, it initially sounded like he was trying to accomplish something. Did I think some of the comments not dealing with the OP's initial posting were needed, probably not, but obviously there is a reason. Some of these threads are funny, cause well most newbies just don't know how to search. I don't have a high post count cause I spend a ton of time searching. If I don't find it I search until I do, and if I still don't, I ask a couple of questions. Does he need to be continually bashed, no, but this is how the internet makes our first amendment rights work. Nothing cracks me up more than someone that buys a vehicle on a whim, cause of what they hear about or read about, only to call it crap later cause they didn't read and search and read more. They need a little love, can be had relatively cheaply, and aren't any harder to work on than a lawn mower with a 3.5hp Briggs engine. To actually think that a valve cover swap on this engine is anything short of time consuming, bud you are in the wrong field to even have posting powers. 2 hours for a bolt that won't thread, really?? I busted a waterpump bolt off in the block, had the old bolt out, new one in in under an hour, having had to return to the hardware store for the correct bolt, a second time. It doesn't take that much time to find a tap or tools for that matter, and yet you don't have a set of what I call water pump pliers that others call slip joint pliers? I will sit back and enjoy others posts and at least know that if I need a shot of some of the missing factory parts on mine, your photos were great since I know my XJ is missing that plastic holder for the two heater hoses, that actually pulls straight off. Popcorn just got done, have to enjoy while its hot

I know for a fact, that if a lot of fellas on here had to work on a vehicle before there was such a thing as an "INTERWEBZ WRITE UP" or Chilton/Haynes, they would be ****ed.
