Default ZJ to XJ Rear Disc Brakes

I have decided to upgrade the brakes as my next project... well after the rock sliders and gas tank skid.

I am following these write ups.

Rear ZJ Disc Conversion

Liberty Disc Brake Conversion

I have a 2001XJ Sport with a C8.25. I am not a mechanic. I haven't been to a JY.

Is it as simple as the write up states? Walk into a JY, tell them the parts, and walk out with junk?

The switch looks failry straight forward. Anyone done this switch specifically from a 94-98 Grand Cherokee or an 03/04 Liberty to a 00/01 XJ shed some light?

well, it is probably as simple as said write up indicates, but if you run into sticky or stubborn parts, it will help to have somebody in the know handy. as for JY parts, check well to see what condition they are in and then compare the cost of new. every now and then, the JY is a rip... every now and then... not usually... depending on the JY... idk...

The junkyards I've been to require you to walk around and find the vehicle with the parts you want and you have to pull them off yourself. But I've only been to 2 so others might be different

and yea to reiterate what VTjeep said, sometimes JY parts are close to the same price as new parts depending on the JY and the type of parts and how they charge. But for rear ZJ disc brakes, you will probably get a better deal at the JY considering the parts are in ok condition. I plan on doing this JY upgrade myself in a couple months

Yea it does depend on the yard. One wouldn't let me and a bud go look around while another barely even looked at us as we walked past. I guess only being late teens at the time they may have thought we were up to no good but come one its a junk yard! lol

I have done this upgrade. It is very straight forward however installing the ebrake hardware is certainly interesting and challenging esp since OP said he has no mechanical experience whatsoever. The install doesn't take long if you are motivated. I am swapping axles so I have been taking my sweet time on this but it is easy if you know what you are doing.

Just called around to the JY within my area, and all are telling me the same thing.

"We only sell the whole axle, not just the brake parts."

They all want $500+ for the whole axle.

So my options are the Teraflex kit for $375.

Is anyone else selling JY kits online somewhere?

Where are you seeing the Teraflex XJ kit for $375? Best price that I've seen is about $550-575!

$379.99. Not sure what big ford housing means, but I have the C8.25.

Seems like total BS that I can't find a place that sells what I want.

2004 Liberty C8.25 Backing plate, calipers, rotors, and hoses. Am I missing something? Why so hard to find?

That stock number looks to be different than the number (4354420) that Teraflex uses on their site and sell it for $567. If you end up taking that route, you may want to plan on another axle anyway.

Just talked to the Jeep Parts Dept in town. They can sell me all the spare parts, but WOW it's more than the whole axle off a Liberty! Plus they are 2+ months back ordered.

Home brew with new parts looks like this.

Backing plate kit is $131/side from stealership. $262 total.
AZ caliper's for $72 for the set.
AZ rotors for $60 for the set.
AZ pads for $50.

So this build starts at $444 (not including misc clips, hoses, studs, etc.). Still too expensive.

You are right though, I had selected the wrong Terraflex kit. I would have to get the $566 kit.

That's because the 4354400 is for the for 8.8 and 9". Although I think the actual parts might be identical minus the break lines. The cheaper package the teraflex labels for the ford doesn't come with any hydrolic lines.
