I'm trying to find a pick n pull to get a new steering column and seat brackets for the 89 xj but not completely sure on what years correlate to mine. According to my Chilton, it is 84-98. Sound about right?

They changed to the new style key, but the column is otherwise the same. No airbag, bolts right up exactly the same. I put a 92 column in an 89 and it was fine. I also grabbed the locks out of the doors and switched the whole thing over to the single, double sided key

That sounds like something I'd want to do - having one key. So, I can go as late as a 92, but I'd have to change the keys? Or were the keys a different project?
