Default XJ wisdom needed

I had an 88 cherokee that I sold when I got married 8 years ago. I really regret that.......... come to think of it I regret the marriage also. Anyway, I want another XJ.
I found one here in Texas, 2001 4dr, 2wd, yellow. 110K miles for $4500 with a bad leak on the oil pan. I really wanted a 4X4. Is that a fair price? What could one find a 4X4 2001 for. Anyone know of any good ones in Texas?
I appreciate any thoughts.

ya, too much, and an xj is useless as 2 wd. a guy i know on here is picking up a nice 01 4x4 with a decent lift in good shape for 4 grand.

hold out for 4x4 no matter what.

keep looking and look for the 97 to 99 so you get the high pinion dana 30 not the low that my 2000 has. and for two wheel drive 100k plus miles and leaks sounds about like a 2500 dollar jeep

@cherokee4meplz, Good advice, goes for XJs and wives! Ok its been a little less than a year since the divorce and I may be bitter, but need a new toy.

This is great info. I can learn from yalls experience (and mistakes) to get it right the first time.

Ok I am starting from scratch, so what year would yall suggest and why?
I dont really want to spend much more than $4K initially.

i personally would want a 99 partially for the better performance such as the intake, it still has the distributor and wire setup for the spark plugs, and the hp dana 30..... i really regret not getting a 99 that i found 2 years ago it was in pristine condition and only $3750 but at that time i wanted a f150........ so just look for a little while and you will find a great jeep for what you want

I'd go later than 97 and earlier than 2000. Some of the last cherokees have cylinder head cracking issues, may want to look into that.

i like my 96, just before the change. the computer system is simpler, and less sensitive to emissions problems. basically 97 and on have a little more likely hood of check engine lights than pre 97. basically because of tighter emissions standards

and the dealer tried to get me to come in for a recall basically to reprogram my computer to pick up emissions failures better. they worded it like it was a great thing, no way buddy, i don't need no catalytic converter failure codes.

I wouldn't own a 2WD Cherokee.It's your choice, though.
