Default Xj tow capacity

I have a 2001 XJ sport with the factory tow package, 4.0L and AW4 transmission. What is the max amount I can tow?

On my '96 the manual says 5000 Lbs. I would assume yours is similar.

It can barely tow itself!! Ha. But ya 5000 is probably near the top end.

If it also has the factory auxiliary tranny cooler and HD cooling, the manual says up to 5K lbs. HD cooling is standard with a/c. We've towed 1500 lbs and u can definitely tell its back there.....can't imagine 5K lbs.

with stock tires (215's) and the 242 TC you could tow a good bit should you have to. We've pulled around 8k with our yota (04 4cyl) Just putting it in 4 low should the truck not want to pull. This is however in a 5 speed...

I wouldnt go over 2-2.5k without trailer brakes

I wouldn't even try to tow more than about 2000 in a Cherokee regardless of what the manual says it is rated for.

These are pretty good rigs, but they do not have the power or cooling system for truly heavy work in a stock form.

The auto tranny won't last too long towing anything heavy. It just isn't designed for that type of work.

As others have said, anything over about 1500 lbs, and I would want trailer brakes.

ive seen a 1500 chevy pull a trailer (such as the kind you would live in) now it went OK but the frame was bent the rear tires are lucky not to have bust, now just because it could do it, it could not do it safely i've pulled a car trailer with an 89 s10 on it and 2 weeks later a 90 s10 it was a bad idea and i had to go slower then traffic,
so with my long answer, i only recommend towing what you are comfortable with and know you can stop.
