On throttle lift this AM my XJ is growling at me. I think it is a U-joint. Probably in the front axle as I had it in 4WD for the first time in about 2 months. Damn, doing front U joints in the cold is going to suck.

Any other ideas what it could be? On the drive home I will put it back into 2WD and see if I have the same noise. If not then I may just be frugal with the 4WD until spring or we have a warm spell on a weekend.

i get the same thing. last night in 4wd in the snow driving around , little noise till i left off the gas then it was just a hounding t me from the front
