XJ Factory Dana 44 Questions
I have the opportunity to put a factory xj Dana 44 in my XJ. I wanted to know if the Dana 44 came with Limited Slip? If it doesn't have limited slip then I'm skeptical if it would be worth it.
The 44 axle i'm looking at is out of a 87 XJ. I also read my 8.25 has bigger axle tubes then the Dana 44, the (8.25 having 3 inch tubes and the 44 having 2.75 inch tubes) Does anyone know what the axle tube wall thickness's are for the 8.25 vs the 44? I'm want to know which is stronger.

A couple ways to know if it's got a LSD in it, spin one tire and if the other spins opposite direction, it's an open differential. However once I bought an 8.25 and did that trick and it acted like it was an open differential till I tore it apart and found it to be a wore out lsd, so I'd suggest Googleing what a Dana 44 lsd looks like and comparing what's in the axle to that.

If you have a 97 and up XJ the Chy 8.25 has 29 spline axles in them and are as strong as a D44.
As for what they have for LSD's or lockers you will need to pull the covers to find out, if the D44 did have one in it most cases would need to be rebuilt just from the age.
JMO but not worth the swap just buy an LSD for yours and be done with it.

Dana 44 3.07
Awesome! Thanks for the tips guys, the axle has 3.07 gears anyways. So I think Ill go with a locker for the 8.25. What are some good brands or options?

Dana 44 MJ or XJ
I cannot tell if this axle is from an MJ or XJ but if i'm not mistaken the MJ had underslung leaf springs and the XJ's went over the axle.

Correct mjs were spring under axle (SUA) xjs were spring over axle (SOA) from the factory. An easy way to tell is if there are shock mounts welded to the axle it's from an xj because on mjs the shocks mounted to the U bolt plates, unless someone modified the axle.

I am going to buy the MJ Dana 44 if I can get a locker and rebuild kit for it. However...
So far all I can find is 44 rebuild kits for 2002+
Also when they say Locker for Dana 30 spline do they mean the TJ Dana 44 or the XJ/MJ Dana 44?
Also does anyone know what the differences are from the XJ/MJ Dana 44 and TJ Dana 44?
Thanks
