Actually the Dana 44 from an 87-89 is a better upgrade with the 29spline 8.25 from a 97+ XJ running a close second.
The Dana44 is stronger (though not by much), does not have C-Clips and has a lot more aftermarket support.
The down-side is the cost. Most folks want $300+ for a D44.

I sold my xj 44 I had in my old 98 for $350 I believe it was and that's the strongest stock xj rear but like other have said there usually not cheap buying them, but modifying them might be a tad cheaper. Anyway as others have said the 29 splined Chrysler 8.25 is pretty much equal and can be picked up off Craigslist or something for $100 or less all day long. That's what I run nowand no problems details in my signature

The Dana 35's aren't horrible. I've got over 320,000 on mine and have used it to tow for a few thousand of those miles. My advise - use 75w-140 or 80w-140 SYNTHETIC gear oil like the manual states and don't try serious off roading or snow plowing etc. unless you're ready to replace it.
Don't fret too much, swapping in an 8.25/29 spline is actually very easy if you want to do it. I just swapped out my D35 and swapped in my 8.25. Took about half a day and you only require minimal add'l parts to do it. Straight swap.

I have noticed that most of the D35 photos I see posted here have hex bolts on the cover and what looks like a rubber plug in the fill hole. Mine has torx bolts in the cover and a torx drive fill plug. Is that because it is the non-C-Clip version of the D35?
I have always wonder about this when looking at the photos.

Not bad if its only a DD but not so good for off road use and I'm guessing it has ABS, I may be wrong? If so getting rid if it also is a good idea the only ABS rear ends were D35's none of the Chy 8.25's were. This is an easy upgrade and a lot of people here have done it for the extra strength.
A D44 is a bit stronger but in most cases not easy to find for a direct bolt-in in your XJ and only found in a few older years of XJ's. The Chy 8.25 with the 29 spline axles (pre-97's I think had 27 splines) are a very close second to the D44 and can be beefed up even more if desired.
The Chy 8.25 can be found easily (look for a 97> 29 spline axles in them) and can be found for $100-200 complete brake drum to drum. As already said this is a direct swap all you would need is a new set of U-Bolts to fit the 8.25 (or if installing a lift at same time the U-Bolts may be included with kit full spring/leaf) and a new set of upper shock bolts if your replacing them at the same time. They always break off 90% of the time so plan on replacing them and a great time while the rear end is out of the way. This is a good time as well to add extended brake lines if you plan on doing a lift being half the line is already disconnected.
