I would run the 8.8.
If you get a newer one, it will have disc brakes already on it. They are dirt cheap and easy to find. The only negative I have heard of is that the tubes are presses into the housing so you have to weld them to keep them from spinning.
It has a 8.8" ring gear compared to the D44 8.5". Aftermarket is good for both.
Not to derail your post, but I like my Chrysler 8.25". The 29 spline 8.25's don't get enough respect. People used to say you couldn't get gear sets low enough, but 4.88's are out there now. Plus the tube diameter is huge which adds to the strength of the assembly.
I just picked up a set of 4.10 geared D30 & Chrysler 8.25's out of a '99 4-cyl with 67k miles. They cost about the same as what new ring and pinion sets would have. I'll swap them in and keep my old shafts for spares.

44 if from an XJ simply because it's a bolt in for the most part.
I'll edit my previous post for spelling errors...

Yes he gave you some good advice.
Next time you should include a little more info about what you're trying to accomplish instead of just asking "Which one is better?"

8.25 has a smaller ring gear, and only 29 splines and it hangs down like the 8.8. YOU can only go to 4.88 for gears. Not a big deal if you always plan to run a d30 up front. Limited after market support in comparison to the other 2 axles listed. direct bolt in
d44 has a larger ring gear then the 8.25, has a 30 spline, but can be upgraded to 33 spline. Tons of gear choices, just about every brand of locker available for the rear. Direct bolt in if pulled from 87-89 xj.
8.8 largest ring gear in the bunch. 31 spline if pulled from the right vehicle, gear choices out the ying. Disc brakes from the factory if pulled from 96-01 explorer/mountanier. Down side is tubes need welding, perches and shock mounts have to be changed. Also narrower then the stock axles.
All of these axles are available from the JY, it is just a matter of finding them on the right day. I have run all 3 of these axles, and they all have there place. As for which one is beter I would say the D44 just because of the amount of aftermarket support. i built mine with alloys and disc brakes for a lil over 600 bucks. My results are not typical, cause i got the disc brake setup and axle for free for doing some work for a buddy. I also got a used loc-right and carrier cheap.
Then I sold my stock axles for a 100 bucks. So all I had to pay for were gears and the machine work on the mounting brackets on the calipers. The ironic thing is I am going to regear it, and I traded a 4.0 fuel injection setup for a brand new set of 4.88's and install kit with a HD dif cover.
