Default XJ Balljoint Dustcaps - Halfshaft Removal?!

Hi,

One of my MOT failure points is: 'Offside front lower suspension arm dust cover'. Looking at the lower front balljoint, the dustcap has a tear in it. However, the mechanic says the halfshaft has to come out to replace it, and all three balljoint dustcaps will have to be replaced.

Has anyone successfully replaced the lower balljoint dustcap without full halfshaft removal?

Has anyone had good success with a universal dustcap, and how will I know which size is best?

Thanks all! Looking forward to getting my XJ on the road!!

Try a cap for now. No i have not had success with universal dust caps and such, Generally i find that by the time the caps fail, the joints are usually bad anyway. You can't access the ball joints without removing the axle shaft. It's only 3 13mm spline bolts. Problem is you need a press to pull the BJs
