XJ 4.0 Engine Bearings

XJ 4.0 Engine Bearings
My XJ just turned 80k miles and noticed some clattering sounds at idle. The local repair boys immediately said I have bad bearings or a broken / loose con-rod. Is this possible? I thought these 4.0 where bullet proof. I always changed oil and did all required maintenance.
If a major engine component is broken, what do you reommend? short block, or repair what I have?
