OK, my Jeep has a misfire and I read that it could be due to timing chain slack and that you can advance spark to compensate by aligning the holes in cam sensor housing with the pulse ring. I set the #1 cylinder to tdc on compression and aligned the holes but after doing that it wouldn't rev past 1000 rpm and would stall out if I tried. Am I not doing something right here? I reset it back to where it was and it is running like it was before. The original position is probably around 15-20 degrees from where the holes would line up with a toothpick.

When you set #1 TDC compression did you verify that the timing marks are aligned at zero. See pic.

Yes, they were covered in oil at first so I sprayed them with brake cleaner, I aligned the notch on harmonic balancer using a mirror duct taped to a screwdriver.

You may want to remove the OPD and see if the drive gear is damaged/worn and/or if the cam helical gear is damaged.

Reinstall per the instructions if okay. Obviously, if you don't have the DRB tool, secure the hold down clamp. If it runs after this you may want to take it to the dealer and have them put their DRB tool on it.
