Rear hatch brake light went out yesterday on my 97 XJ Sport, now all brake lights are out. I checked the wiring going into the hatch and like 4 or 5 of the wires are broke. There's little to no slack in the wiring harness to mend the broken wires....any suggestions?

If you follow the harness down you should be able to find some slack in it. I'd suggest replacing the wire and making 2 different connections on either side of the hatch joint. That way you new connection isn't still in a bad spot.

 

i've only taken off the top gray panel, theres no slack there, i'll try following it down a little further. any other suggestions? like replacing the whole bundle or anything?

If you have to get some butt connectors and some wire. Just don't cheap out on the butt connectors and use some heat shrink.

 

yeah thats looking like my only option at this point.

 

You're looking at maybe $20 in parts/tools if you don't already have a wire stripper/crimper. It's an easy job. I just redid the entire wire harnesses on two Yamaha bikes for less than $30 in parts.

 

Just don't put the new connection in the same place the old wire broke... It'll break again.
