Default Wiper blade spline shaft up/down movement normal?

Since the passing of my son I took the XJ back over and starting to fix it back up again. Notice when wipers are turned on I can see the arm slide upward (away) from the shaft. Removed the arm and it's the spline shaft that's moving . Both sides does it but drivers is worse. Is this normal? Thanks...Don't know why VLC when it converted the clip to aWMV it flipped it but yall know what it is.

Mine does this as well. I'm not sure if it's supposed to, but it does. Perhaps a bit less than yours. I always assumed it was a worn bushing of some sort.

Thanks, I may go ahead and remove the linkage and motor just to take a look and grease everything since I have the arms off anyway for sanding and repainting.

Report back here if you're successful, as I'd love to hear if/how you fixed it.

If you're going to pull the linkage assembly out, replacing the bushings will take a lot of the slop out of the wiper movement (not the in-out though)

I think this set made by Dorman, but I don't have the number handy.

The Dorman wiper bushing kit at your local auto parts help section has the bushings you need, its a multi-aplication kist so it has ones you don't. There is a thread on here somewhere about changing them it is helpful, it was very needed on my rig and made a world of difference.

From what I seen those kits doesn't have what is needed for this issue and the only way I see to get to the part got to grind down end of shaft as it's peened to even get the the part which looks like a flat spacer /washer with looks like rubber or nylon on other side see pic.
circled part is end of shaft. Will need to be grinded down to allow removal as it's peened guess could weld back.

washer/shim or what ever you want to call it is worn out...One thing thought of trying out some e-clips to shove in there to take out the slop.

You might be able to take a nylon washer, notch the side a little narrower than the diameter, and slip it in like a c-clip.

Don't know if you saw my other post but unless you want to grind down end of shaft to remove the worn out part which looks like a washer with hard rubber on it as shaft is peened what I did was found a small e clip that fit in there acting as a shim to take out most of the play. I got pics in other post showing the peened shaft and the worn out part. I used a e clip that was also thin enough to where it still had a little play as figure rather be on loose side then too tight dfue to the plastic cover around it.

I just got some e clips from work and used them but yes another good option.
