Wiper blade/arm sliding off window?
 

Everytime the windshield is wet my driver side blade will slide off the window about an inch or so. Its really annoying cause it its the rubber windshield gasket and paint and makes an annoying noise. Is there anyway to adjust the arm so it does not do this? I have already tried a shorter blade. This doesn't happen if the Window is dry.

sounds like you are not using the correct mount that comes with the wiper.

Wrong Length used, or the wrong mounting clip, or when the wipers are at rest, do they sit half way up the windshield. If that is it, you can reposition them on the splined mounting post. So they do sit down when not being used. Because other wise they are starting out to high.

mine actually does the same thing, and if i adjust it any further down the windshield it will be hitting on the bottom. I am using the OEM length wipers. I dont think there is much you can do about it, but it causes me to buy new wipers once a year, because it starts to knock the blade off of the actual wiper. it's kinda a PITA, but there isn't much else i can do.

Check that the wiper arms are on the shafts that come up thru the cowl are on in the right position.
With the wipers turned off, the wiper blade should be parallel with the bottom edge of the windshield about 1 1/2" up. That stud is a splined shaft and the arms could be installed a tooth or 2 off.

Grab the wiper and see if there's play in the mechanism.
It might be that the splines are chewed up in the wiper arms, or it could be the bushings in the mechanism that connects the wiper motor to the arms are trashed.

...or somebody replaced the arms with ones that are too long?

yea those are high, remove the arms and move them down a little, should be parallel with the bottom of the windshield

How difficult is it to remove the arms? I assume once I remove the arm I will want to not manipulate the arm, but whatever the arm attaches to?

they're easy to remove. you just pull a little tab out and they slide right off.

this is speaking from experience with my 97, not sure on older years

I had the identical problem on my 98. I suspect that the bushings on the linkage under the cowl are worn. Chances are that a junkyard linkage would be worn, too. Here's the fix:

Dorman part# 49447 A blister pack containing bushing assortment for 1997 -2001 Cherokee XJ

Remove the cowl vent panel and unbolt the entire wiper motor assembly. Snake it out of the cowl. Pop out the plastic bushings and pop in the new ones. Pop the balls into the new bushings with a little vaseline. Put everytrhing back together. Drive in the rain happy.

Kit 49447 fits '91
 

I know this is an old thread, but just for the record...
I had a similar problem, but it was the right wiper that was messed up, either slapping the lower windshield trim and cowling, or parked too high if I reset it on the splines to offset the problem. I found that the three bolts attaching the motor to the mount were loose, besides the bushings being worn. In fact, I think the motor being loose was the main problem. Tried to catalog a kit for a '91 all over the web with not much luck. Most places will tell you the 49447 kit isn't compatible with a '91, but it is.
