will a 97 xj back door work on a 93?

Liftgate? No.
Passenger door? It can be made to work, but the strikers are different - you'll need to use the same striker the door originally used (which I've seen done) or swap the door latches (I'm not sure if that's doable.)
Be sure to stick to 2D-2D or 4D-4D - the 2-door doors are longer front-to-back than the four-door doors.
