i got a 93 cherokee 2 door sport with the inline6 , manual. Sometimes when i turn tthe key to start it it clicks like when the battery id dead but i turn it back to off and re do it and it will start no problem. it only does it sometimes and sometimes itll click a few times then all of a sudden turn over. now i know its not my bettery or charging system because itll work when i try it agian. my question is is it the wire harness in the steering stem or i think it might be the where the oil filter is just above my starter might be leaking on the starter and power cable to it. its not actualy leaking but when the po changed oil he got oil on the connector. so would that do it?

 

starter or battery wires and terminals.. check your grounds also. had same problem. not to long ago.

yeah. could be just the solenoid.... but in some years of xj the starter and the solenoid are one. cannot be removed from one another.and is sold as 1.

Sounds like your starter may just be going out to me. The clicking is most likely your selonid doing what it's supposed to. If you have someone with you when it wont turn over, have them hold the ignition to start, and beat on your starter with a hammer. If it engages and starts, thats your problem.
