If you grab the pitman arm can you move it? Mine looks like that too and my steering is fine.If you can move it then you may want to replace it.

I agree with what Troy said. Also check your steering stab. I had tons of play and replaced it and wow is it better now.

I bought my xj a week ago and it had very loose steering also. I changed that part yesterday and I noticed a difference before I even left the driveway. Might be worth the 20 bucks to see if it helps you out too
