would any of you guys happen to know what is so unique or different about the '95 XJ vs the 1996 model which results in nothing like the part which is available as an entire unit for the '96 but not at all for the '95 that I can find ?
Here is what I talk about :
http://www.quadratec.com/products/51306_0147.htm
It is the entire sending and pump unit tank drop-in for fuel that I reference . My pump went bad and after as many miles as I have I am afraid of what I may find when disassembling so figured I'd just replace everything in there but cannot locate anything.
Also , what is best siphoning method for extracting a full tank of gas prior to doing this ? I read of guys having difficulty siphoning from filler tube do I have to siphon after removing pump lock ring ?
This is first repair I am fearful of on my XJ so any help appreciated.
Background:
Oh, I diagnosed everything about a crank , no start down to a bad pump in tank . No pressure at Schrader valve relief , No noise back there when starter turned on even after replacing the fuel pump relay and fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator is why I am doing this .
It's the '96 that's the "unique" year. That fuel module you link to has the pressure regulator attached to it. Your '95 has the pump and sending unit combined.
Yes, I suppose that makes sense now that I look at it; I already replaced the Pressure Regulator and on my 95 it is prior-to and near the fuel rail in engine bay.
I suppose they simply make no "all in one drop in" assembly for the 1995s in the same manner they do for the 1996 or earlier models (go figure I would have the "red-headed stepchild" scenario with my XJ, heh) I have no choice but to replace the pump on the sending unit assembly I have in the tank already. Again, my fear is extracting that as a unit because after 378,000 miles I have no idea what condition it is in and if i will be able to extract it + beyond-that affix a new fuel pump and new inlet filter without damaging it. Then getting it back in the tank...
That is why I was looking at going ahead and being proactive and ordering an entire fuel pump/gauge sender unit assembly .
I have a pump coming as well as filters ,O-rings, etc.
This all sounds incredibly "do-able" until you factor in the possibility of age resulting in something breaking ...
Maybe head to a local junkyard and remove all of the relevant stuff from one of those Jeeps. You'll have practiced it once, plus you'll have "extra" pieces in case you break something.

In middle Tennessee where I am I just happen to have friends who run an (approximately) 200 Acre salvage yard about 15-20 miles away; You, Mr. Mahoney Jr , read my mind, lol.
that is a good plan and if time permits I shall do just that.
Unfortunately, as the economy goes, so goes the salvage yards and while I used to slap a $20 spot on the desk and be able to go have my run of the lot and play with stuff all day if I wished; i will have to check on how their policies are these days.
Sadly, tweakers and sketchy folks have messed up a lot of freedom and liberties for the rest of us!
Thanks, dude.
Jeep On and I am grateful for your ideas/.

Yes, In my build thread you'll see that I just went to two local wrecking yards to find stuff, and it's a pretty limited selection. One huge lot near me just scrapped their entire inventory. There is exactly 1 engine block left, sitting in the back of the lot.
I have a few pull-a-parts near me, with a bunch of cherokees in the inventory, but I'm trying to avoid going there.
IIRC Spectre markets a kit with tank, pump, sending unit, etc plus straps & bolts for about $200 more or less. In the past I have bought them online and installed them in a 91 xj, & a 95 xj. In both cases the tank had rotted where it made contact with skid plate & I didn't feel like messing with swapping pumps, sending units, etc. FWIW Spectre is part of the conglomerate that sucked up Ready-Rad, and a bunch of other companies when the economy took a nose dive. I have had good luck with their parts & had no 'come backs'.
man, this is a great forum.
Thanks for the replies.
So, anyone wanna see how obsessively compulsive 20+ years of owning the same XJ makes a guy?
I think that last part listed at the FactoryChrysler site is what I got but - redundantly and not at-all cost consciously - I have learned better than to trust a single source Sooo
I have these coming ( also a couple of 5 gallon jerry cans and all plastic siphon) [1] I dunno about this one.< http://a.co/e3SUD47 > It is either gonna be the right pump but I question it being the entire assembly even tho it says it is. The reason it is out of supply is I got the last one. It will either be perfect or absolutely wrong.
then , I did not know that my wife, she took a link i shared yesterday with her and went ahead and ordered that , also.
so i also have this kit coming : < http://a.co/7X8L9ih >
I will likely accrue some loss of return shipping or possibly even hold onto one of them but that way I have two options in case something is not right and HOPEFULLY this can get us back up and rolling.
Honestly, i feel the mileage I have gotten out of the factory pump from 1995 was pretty good, lmao. That is good info on the rusty tank. I am a fluid film fanatic and the underside still has the coating on the body and hardly any rust after all these years. But , wasn't 1995 or 1996 the last year before the tank went plastic? I think it was plastic in '97 but maybe wrong. I have not looked nor sprayed under gas skid in a few years...
I will do an image summary of my install and fun with all of this - including the full tank of gas siphoning- and post here this weekend . That'll be some payment for the help in the way of humor for you to all laugh at my misery or enjoy /learn/mock /learn what not to do/ whatever...
I am just grateful to have folks give me some feedback and help.
Can anyone say "throw parts at it! one pump will have to be the right one!" ?
BTW, @freedgr
are those really 38s you're running on that XJ in your avatar, dude?
Those are monsters!
( I just checked your images, they are a very impressive set of meats, man.

Sure are go big or stay on hard ground in south florida. Currently on 30s got 8 years out of them saving for new tires.

Nice. Yeah, I'm from Georgia - live in Tn - and am aware of the Florida req for the big meats and the mud bogs , heh. It's still not that common seeing a XJ sporting massive tires such as those , tho
Rocks are my thing but I do understand the saving required for new tars!

I got the fuel pump all installed ; I thank you guys for the help ,again.
if you recall , as above mentions, I was set up with either that Airtex assembly($240?) or the HPF fuel pump kit ($60 I think) which just uses the existing assembly and just had what was required to replace the burned out pump and some other things.
It was the cheaper option and since I didn't have to use the expensive assembly I will send it back.
Here is what a fuel pump off of a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Country looks like after running gas thru it for over 375,000 miles.
oh, notice how different the airtex intended for this year is from the actual assembly in it.
that must be for a WJ or ZJ maybe? It looks like it would work but not at all similar to the one I had from factory.
wanna see a few other photos, I have archived what I took here. I meant to capture the entire replacement process but took in so many damned gas fumes I was too high an sick to document the whole thing. Lol.
