I think what you're asking is can an older xj with R22 be retro-fitted with R134a? The answer is yes, R134A is the replacement for R22. You can do some simple research online to find out more. If the R22 is still in this system, it will have to be evacuated into an approved container. If the system is empty, it's empty for a reason (leaks). You would have to fix the leaks, pull a vaccuum on the system with a vaccum pump to remove any water and contaimanents (spelling?), and charge the system with the proper amount of R134A and oil. After doing all of this, your compressor may not last too long especially if it's been sitting unused for any length of time. I would recommend replacing the compressor if you go through all the trouble of replacing the refrigerant. Important - R22 contains CFCs and cannot legally be handled without being certified.

I've done 2 r12 to r134a conversions (not XJs).....flushed evap and cond, blew out with compressed air, replaced dryer, orifice tube, o-rings, added PAG oil and had a/c shop pull vacuum and add r134a. Both cooled just as good after conversion as before.
