ok, so for a different perspective on the issue, i took two videos of the jeep idling so you can hear the noise i'm dealing with.
this first one started recording after about 30 secs after i started up the jeep.

it would sound really loud like that, then die down a little it seemed, and come back.
the second one, was after it had been running for about a minute or so, and i turned the AC on on the lowest setting. you can kinda hear the noise come and go.

since it's making a lot of noise all the time, i'm guessing the clutch is stuck, or the compressor is seized and just stays engaged? and b/c of that it makes a lot of noise and causes the belt to squeal. or it is going to turn out to be something else?
i tried this method b/c it was easier than taking the belt off right now and putting it back on myself (was a pita for me, guess i just haven't done enough belts. and auto work is frowned upon in my apt complex), and i didn't want to take it off and not be able to get it back on in case i need to drive it a short distance or get it on a trailer. i hope this helps a little better than pictures, and i appreciate any input.
i guess the only upside of this is that after sitting for a week, it started right up w/out any hesitation.

every place i have called doesn't have the bypass pulley for a 2001. and they all tell me it has to be specif to that year.
finally i called dorman, and they don't make a bypass pulley for the 2001. any other suggestions? i don't have the fab skills to retro fit my own.
