Whistling cherokee. WHAT!
well I was wrong about mine too, i thought my squealing/grinding noise was my idler pulley but when i took it all apart today found out it was teh power steering, after removing the pulley from the power steering pump i found the bearing where chewed up really badly and even missing liek 2 or 3 *****, so i replaced it with a 75$ remanufactured P.O.S pump from napa, the noise went away and all is better
but let me tell you guys something about remanufactored pumps from napa... f$#cking waste of money!!! they work but whine and groan like a *****, dont buy em unless you have to, i would recommend looking at junkyards or dealerships for the right one. but atleast my jeep is fixed.

You may have figured out you wistle but I put an aftermarket cold air intake on a 1996 Jeep Grand chrokee and that think wistled kinda like a turbo at high rpm, kinda sounded neat, cant remember what the brand was but I did take it off cus' it wasn't a cold air intake it was a suck all the heat from the engine compartment intake, no shields and sat directly over the distributor, wide open... Any way take a look at your throttle body may have some build up that could be cuasing some turbulance and causeing the wistle, not sure if it is as bad as it sound though....
Well I know this thread may not be recent and I've asked all over but can't seem to get anywhere.
When I spray water on the belt, its stops squealing.
Keep in mind I've got...a new belt, a new idler pulley and new alternator and the belt is pretty darn tight. I don't believe its the w/p, p/s or a/c because the very fact that the water stops the squeal until the water dries and I'm right back where I started. Am I correct in this assumption? I've also done the screwdriver/stethoscope trick and both sound fine.
I'm going to rent the belt tension tester from advanced to make sure its where it should be before I take it to the shop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My father in law tried to "help" me by spraying belt dressing on the new belt and turned the squeaky squeal into a sonic boom. Which in turn ended up having me remove the belt and clean all the pulleys off with some brake cleaner. If I can avoid that again I will.
However, I'm willing to try anything at this point.
Ok well the shop just put on another new belt. Stopped the squealing. I do believe the problem was the belt dressing that was used on the old belt was I never cleaned the pulleys before installing the new belt and the belt dressing left on the pulleys contaminated the new belt and made it squeal. Once the new belt had some belt dressing on it, it was never going to be quiet.
So a big DUH for me.

"WOO WOOOOO"
Thaaats right, now run along and buy yourself some shiny rims, idiot.
