whinning fuel pump??

whinning fuel pump??
my friend borrowed my jeep and it was low on gas so he grabbed a small can of gas out of the garage and dumped it in. i get home and on my way to the gym i notice the fuel pump is whinning and ask him what can he used and it turns out he used this nasty a@# gas. the whinning got progessively worst and then started cutting out. is my fuel pump toast. or should i fill it up with gas and run it. oh prior to today she ran like a top. any info greatly appreciated
