just got a 98 classic with 106k no rust, will be using it for my winter driver from now on, no lifts, no mud just a winter dd. so what can I check for when buying a used 242 to replace the 231? anyone rebuilding these for a reasonable price? will I need a different shifter and linkage in addition to the bezel

I swapped from a 242 to a 231 and all I changed was the bezel and the plug on the transfer case.

You'll want one between '97-01 to ensure the spline count is the same. If you can find one with an SYE installed even better!

Grab the front output yoke and give it a sharp twist back and forth. You'll be able to hear the chain slapping the side of the case if it's real loose. Rebuild kits with good Japanese bearings and a new chain are just under 300 dollars and it's a super easy component to rebuild, if you want to go cheaper you can buy a rebuild kit and chain from Rock Auto for around 150 or so. It's a one day job including removal and re-installation if you are mechanically inclined. If you have done it before you can probably knock it out in a half day.
