just got a 98 classic with 106k no rust, will be using it for my winter driver from now on, no lifts, no mud just a winter dd. so what can I check for when buying a used 242 to replace the 231? anyone rebuilding these for a reasonable price? will I need a different shifter and linkage in addition to the bezel

knew all that stuff from research here but my question was what to physically check on when buying one. chain slop how? etc thanx so far

Grab the front output yoke and give it a sharp twist back and forth. You'll be able to hear the chain slapping the side of the case if it's real loose. Rebuild kits with good Japanese bearings and a new chain are just under 300 dollars and it's a super easy component to rebuild, if you want to go cheaper you can buy a rebuild kit and chain from Rock Auto for around 150 or so. It's a one day job including removal and re-installation if you are mechanically inclined. If you have done it before you can probably knock it out in a half day.

thanx...those are the answers I was looking for. saw the youtube video for overhaul and yes I am a mech. 30 yrs on big jets, 10 yrs navy. not many projects left arthritis creeping in
