I did the same thing to a Dodge Powerwagon back in the mid-90s.

It's amazing how little work it is to make it come out looking great with flat paint.

I've been trying to convince my wife to let me do her XJ in sand and forest rustoleum. :^)

Let us know how that works out for you! My wife and I have never agreed on a color yet.

Hmm, now after seeing a hell of a roll on job like this has me thinking! As long as you stick to flat colors, I guess you really can do a decent job. A friend of mine, and myself painted his yamaha 650 flat black the other day with spray cans. Came out amazingly decent.

Good work on the XJ!

Yes, my wifes car is a 1980 mustang with the mighty 3.3l 6 Cyl.

Yes, I used some cheap stencil kits for the black and white lettering.

I will probably change the color to a gloss hunter green sometime as I am thinking that snow and ice is gonna stick like mad. Applying a gloss is the same procedure as the semi-gloss, but I will need to wet-sand every 3-4 coats or so. I have experimented on some scrap metal and it turns out awesome. Will probably redo my hood on my black 99 that way.

I am diggin the military look. One thing you could do that I think looks good is to put the PSI over each tire. Thats how all the vehicles are here in the Army. Just my .02.

The removable doors took me a few hours of tinkering. I first removed the doors from the hinges with my trusty Torx bit. Then I cut the bottoms of the hinges and pounded out what was left of the rusty hinge pins on both the XJ and the hinge pieces. I also unscrewed the light switches and zip-tied the wires so they won't fall back into the pillar hole. I then found a metric bolt that fit snugly in the XJ hinge holes and ran to the hardware store to buy 8 long shoulder bolts. I cut the bolts down to maybe 1.5 inches and tack welded them into the door hinge hardware. After eyeballing the hinge placement on the doors, I was able to re-hang the doors and finalize any adjustments needed. Now I can simply open the doors and lift them off when I want to run doorless. I need to make a plug for my front door speakers though.

Needed to make a drivers side outside mirror too. Was 8 bux at the parts store. A bit of 1 inch conduit and some flat black spraypaint.

I would like to add more markings, but I cannot find any "official" marking diagrams. I was going to add the GVW to the hatch and lower fenders, but what is the GVW of a 1984 XJ Pioneer??

Any more marking ideas would be appreciated too! Gotta use my fancy new stencil kits.

Hmmmm....
I'm thinking that some .50 cal machine guns inside the rear door wells would be a nice touch...
Kinda hard to find, though....

I picked up an empty 1 gallon paint can from the store when I purchased the paint. I dumped them both into the empty can and carefully stirred. The super high zinc content of the Stops Rust Rusty Metal printer should keep any rust at bay for a while. The paint is very hard and tough when it cured.
