Quote: No, no you don't.

Pray tell us EXACTLY how you are calculating this.
Incorrectly is the answer. He already stated he has 31's. Stock tire size was what, 27.5-28? That alone is going to skew the readings.

http://www.onlineconversion.com/bigger_tires.htm

Simple calculators here. You have changed tire size. So a straight up calculation won't give you accurate readings, as you have changed it from stock.

This is why people regear their diffs and change the speedo gear, after adding larger tires, to get it as close to a stock reading as possible.

Ah....

Another 30 mpg XJ myth busted. If mine got close to that I'd dump my Honda as a commuter.

1989 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0L automatic 4-speed with 235/70/15 (larger than stock but not too large) and I'm getting approximately 10-14 mpg. I get 230 out of a full tank but 270-280 if I drive like a grandpa.

Hire a Volkswagen engineer. They will get you whatever mpg you want. And have it pass emissions!

OH, they are all in jail right now. Sorry.

Let's see,

99 classic, 4.0 auto, roughly 5.5" of lift, 35x12.5x15s and I'm at about 11mpg. Then again, my speedo gear fused to the t case output shaft and I'm going by a phone speedo now

I've been looking for one of their used diesels a couple of yrs. old to buy before they have a chance to screw them up. They run well and get VG MPG as they are, Screw the EPA. Those guys were sharp and fooled them for a very long time we need more like them. We have none of that BS testing around here or this state.

My daily is a 2003 Jetta Wagon, diesel with a manual. No cheater chip, hell the cat isn't even monitored. Aired up my all seasons and get around 45 MPG to work and back. Would get better if it was flat land, LOTS of hills. Lots of great views of some lakes, too!

I share much of your sentiment.

You might look for a good VW in California. They may be real cheap since they might not be re-registerable since they cannot pass emissions. Don't know what the California gov official response to the issue is. But I am sure they want those cars off the road because they are ruining the world.

Like a modern non compliant VW is worse on the environment than a durable 25 year old XJ?

About 2 hrs trips at 90 +/-5 kph (55 mi/hr)
My 89 XJ - 20 - 21 mpg (Imperial gallon, equates to about 16 mpg US gal)
95ZJ - 25 - 27 mpg
02 WJ - 26 - 28 mpg
02 Intrepid (2.7L) - 32-35mpg

Around town type driving, XJ 18-20, ZJ 20-22, WJ 20-22, Intrepid 28-30

How much environmental resource goes into the manufacture of today's autos? How many will be produced and consumed to provide my 26 years (and counting) of XJ endurance? What will a 26 year old Prius look like?

Want no BS, Cow farts do equivalent environmental effects as my Jeep fleet.

1998 Sport. 4.0 AW4 235/75/15 3.55 gears. 203,600 miles. I get about 13-15 mpgs average. I drive it like a Mustang so that why my numbers drop. I also have a cracked exhaust manifold and the O2 sensors look original.

That is very much my point. No one really counts the cost digging up a mountain for the iron ore, frack for oil to run the smelter, refine oil to make all the plastic, ruin a Canadian town to mine the metals for the batteries, and on and on and on...

So some one can drive a Pius that will last a fraction of your XJ. And then replace it at that environmental cost all over again...while you are still driving your XJ.

BUT... The SMOG level is reduced...and with all the Pius drivers, the SMUG level has gone way UP!!!! Meanwhile they still have to get a new environmentally costly car every few years...

And our XJ's just keep goin' on!

2000 with 155k miles, 31s 3.55 gears 4.5 lift. Roof rack with spare tire and lights on the roof. 15mpg. I measured my mpg after taking the doors off for the weekend and got slightly better mileage. maybe a fluke or maybe the weight savings outweighed the extra aerodynamic drag. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Just finished a 250 mile trip in my stock 1998 4.0 AW4. 75% highway at about 65 mph. A few miles of gridlock and the rest city driving. 17 mpg. Had 2 passengers and 200lbs of gear.
