Ok so in the last few days it sounds like someone angered a hornets nest under the XJ when Im driving it. Just a constant "droning" sound thats getting pretty loud... Any ideas, thoughts on what that could be?

If it`s a stick, it could be a throw out bearing or the tranny.
if it`s an automatic it could be your tranny

Check the fluid if its an automatic. I had the same problem and found the trany to be low. It happened when i added a new tranny cooler to mine, The holes were leaking and i had no idea.

Ill check the tranny fluid... its a manual... the sound is there even when im not rolling, so in leaning towards the tranny, not u joints, bearings etc, right?

Since it does it when you are sitting still, it's not a u-joint, hub, driveshaft or either diff.

You need to isolate the noise to see if it is engine or trans related.

1. Start the Jeep, put it in gear, but keep your foot on the clutch. In doing so, the input shaft of the trans will not be turning at all. If you still have noise, it could not be from any internal trans component. If noise is gone, it's most likely trans related.

2. Shift into neutral and let the clutch out. Now the input shaft of the trans will be spinning at the speed of the engine. If the noise starts when you let out the clutch, it could indicate a trans issue such as an input shaft or possibly a bearing, etc

It could be a throw-out bearing either way, but it would more than likely make noise when the clutch pedal is pressed if it's the culprit.

if it does it out of gear and gets louder with a motor rev. I had a harmonic balancer on its way out that sounded just like that. could also be front drive shaft, I would unbolt it and take it for a ride.

Exhaust leak maybe? Put your hand over the tailpipe while the car is running and see what happens.

Had a similar droning sound once, turns out Al Gore was lodged in between the block and the upper control arms, *****ing about the environment.

There should be a writeup somewhere on the site about how to remove Al Gores, just use the search option.

Hadn't checked in for a while, i'll tey the above when i leave work today... I'll also look into the "al gore" theory =)
