Trying to fix my speedometer...it doesn't work a lick, nor does the odometer.
1988 Cherokee XJ. Was originally and auto, previous owner converted it to manual.
Cable Speedometer.
Pulled cluster and stuck drill into speedo input...it turns and works properly.

Crawled down to the xfer...what's this big long space needle looking contraption attached to the xfer case? It has 2 wires coming out of it and the speedo cable screws into it.

That's the speedometer sensor. The plastic gear inside the tranny could be broken.

Thanks Laredo. I was actually referring to the space needle thing sticking out of the differential with 2 wires coming out of it. I believe it's the sending unit for the Cruise Control (which my jeep doesn't have..LOL). But you're right about the gear...I pulled it out and and the gears are damaged. I tried to turn the sending unit mechanism and it appears to be stuck...or really difficult to turn. Which would explain the stripped plastic gears. So, I'm in for a new gear and a longer speedo cable.
