Default What size tire works best for an XJ

Ok, guys so It's getting close to time for me to buy my next set of tires. Based on my lift and current gearing, I am stuck between 2 sizes of tire.

34x10.50.x15 = Super swamper LTB

or

33x12.50x15 = Mudder of some sort. (looking at Pro-Comp, Maxxis Big Horn, Summit Mud dawg, General Grabber, Maxxis Mudzilla)

Based on the size of the LTB, I believe it would be great for an XJ. It's taller an narrower than the average 33. So, I'm thinking better traction and mayb a little lighter. definitely easier to fit and flex with. I just don't know how well the 10.50 width would work for flotation.

Basically what I'm asking is which size would be best for my XJ and give me detailed reason why???? Thanks Guys.

I say 33x12.5 or step up to 35x12.5 trim if needed.

My reason is...

34 vs 33 only an inch taller over all. But once on wheel only 1/2 inch. Not much there.

Now 10.5 vs 12.5 that is a full two inches wider. 2 more inches of tires on ground. That isn't even taking airing down into factor.

Now the 33x12.5 is a popular tire plenty of people run it. So possibilty of plenty spares availabe if you need one on a trail. Also if you go used they are easy to find.

Now if you go with the 34s you might as well go 35x12.5
2 inches more the 33 insteas 1. Or 1 inch more once on rim.
Still have the 12.5 width. And once again people run 35s

Now price wasn't even a factor in this decision. If it was the 33s seem econmical.
The 34s are about 170 a tire I know there are 33s that cost more but there are 33s that are cheaper. There are so manychoices of 33s.
35s are pricey.

But hey its your rig. 34x10.5 SS LTB I think will look sweet. Better then most 33 MTs and on par with some 35 MTs.

P.s. how bad are your 32s. What are you doing with them? Hint wink

how much are you looking to spend?
i am going bfg km2s 35s this summer. they are cheaper than the bfg 33s and are more agressive. they are about 196 a tire.

i would go 35 because i have heard that if you go 34s you will have wished you bought 35s. 33s work well too but a little bit of trimming and you can fit 35s easy on 6" of lift

depends on what kinda trails you roll. The place by me usually has some pretty deep ruts so I'd go bigger. I wanna go 35's, but I think I'll stick to 33's and use the money i saved not buying 35's for a rear locker or skids.

I would go for the 34's only because you will always have wished for the bigger tire. Aired down 10.5's usually work pretty well to. And I doubt any of the 33's you got lined up are as aggressive as the LTB's.

Brandon I noticed in your Evans Creek pics that you run BFG Mudders. How have these tires worked for you? The reason I ask is this. I had a set of the "Old Skool" BFG mudders on my Toyletta and while these tires were great off road. In about 2 years time, I had separated steel belts on 3 of the 4 while driving on road. I heard the new KM2 version has fixed this problem and the weak sidewall problem the old BFGs had.

my km's are kinda new. they seem to work pretty well. i must say though that the 31 inch cooper discoverer stt's i first bought had a little more tackiness to them. but these to pretty good. i have been looking into the km2s and i am gonna go with those next. i have heard nothing but good news from them. about half my jeep club runs them and they love them

I would be careful with the LTB's, they are bias ply and will ride, well not as good as a radial. I ran TSL bias and pulled them off just as quick as they went on, horrible experience to say the lease (Death Wobble to the extreme).

Went to some brand new 33x12.50 BFG mud terrains (original ones) and never looked back. Probably my favorite tire.

If your looking for something nasty, maybe the Swamper TSL Radial.

A buddy of mine had some Dunlop Mud Rovers (cheap) and he swore by them, of course they were on a Toyota........

Watch your axle size though, I have pics of a guy holding his 34's on the end of a broken axle...
If you run larger than 32's, you should be running Dana 44's.

Ltb's and lighter should not be in the same sentence lol. If its a daily driver I wouldnt run ltb's. I have a set on my trail rig and no way would I want to drive those every day
