What to replace???
Hey everyone,
I just picked up my first jeep every and am glad i can finally join the jeep forums. I picked up a 2000 XJ with 210k on it that is completely stock. I started inspecting it and noticed that the water pump was leaking, valve cover, rear main seal, oil pan gasket. I ripped everything apart and cleaned off the 5+ years of valve cover leak and everything else that looked like it had oil on it. I picked up a new water pump from NAPA thinking it would be good to go but not so much. After i put everything back on and started bleeding the radiator the pump started leaking. I ripped everything back apart and just replaced the pump with another pump. After i put everything back together i started getting a screeching noise what i cranked the car. With the Jeep being 16 years old and the PO saying they didn't replace any parts except the AC Compressor, i was thinking i should start replacing all the pullies. I scooped up a new Idler Pulley and Fan Clutch since those were easy to replace. I put everything back on including a new serp belt and i'm still getting a screeching noise. Along with the noise I'm also smelling a burning smell and I'm seeing a little smoke coming up from what looks like the bottom of water pump where the lower radiator hose connects. Prob just my eyes but was thinking its the power steering pulley.
I was thinking of picking up a new power steering Pulley today and putting that on but i wanted to see if i should go ahead and pick up anything else that should be replaced based on miles of car and age???
Alternator Pulley?? Balancer? Water pump Hub? Fan Clutch Hub? Water pump? Thermostat? Hoses (which ones)?
Thanks ahead

Get a belt tension gauge, and make sure you are achieving the appropriate tension for a new belt. The xj has a relatively long belt, so it doesn't like being even a little loose. You can tighten without a gauge, but if something else is causing a problem, you could easily over-tighten it. The tension gauge will help make sure that doesn't happen.
The most likely reason you heard screeching on cranking was because the belt was slipping. And when it slips, it gets hot, and will produce smell and a little smoke.
If it was this way for a while, you might even want to start with a new belt again. Because the slipping will cause it to get "glazed" which will cause more slipping, especially when wet, and will also degrade the life of the belt.

Thank you guys for the responses... I am going to pick up a tension gauge to ensure the belt is on correctly. I am also going to go ahead and replace the power steering pump pulley. How long does a pulley bearing usually last?
The smoke that was mentioned earlier looks to be residual oil from the cleanup of the engine.
