Ha! Thanks, I was starting to think I was the only guy who had one. I'm inclined to agree with the other posters - it's theoretically there to kick the steering gear up in the event of a front end impact in order to keep the steering wheel/column from spearing the driver. Thanks to everyone for sharing their ideas!
