Default what now

My son has a 1999 cherokee 4.0 with a locked up motor, so what direction would you go re-man, new, salvage yard, rebuild the old one?
looking at re-man long blocks but dont know who to trust
used seem high around here $1200.00 average at salvages
I could rebuild it myself but dont know why its locked up yet could be junk
thanks

I would remove the spark plugs and drop the pan and try to see went wrong.

And also you could tell us what happened before he locked it up.

I would drop the pan and shine a flash light up there at the pistons and see what went wrong. If there's no scoring on the cylinder walls. I would say just to rebuild it.

Have you tried to turn the crankshaft by hand? Why would it be hydro-locked was it driven through water?

I agree to do an "autopsy" and decide from there. It also depends on the condition of the Jeep and how long you plan to keep it.

I'm not concerned with why exactly why its locked up i'll do that later after i get him back on the road, i'm just mostly wanting to know who to trust in the re-man & or used industry, rebuilding the engine would be logical But that would take longer than a used or re-man, Ive noticed on re-mans they want the motor to turn 360 deg to call the core good
thanks

$1200 is kinda pricey, you can get a re-man for a little more & better warrantee.
You need to see why the motor will not rotate 360 & go from there, (i e remove the blockage so you can use the block for a core) rebuild or re-man.

yea i'll make sure it rotates before i use it as a core for sure, im ruling out the rebuilt just from a time factor, ive found a couple of used motors (this would give me a spare motor) with under 60,000 miles, my son loves his cherokee, so hell drive it a least untill he's out of college 21/2 years, and i agree if a re-mans only 400.00 more id rather do that but who makes a good one?

Myself, I wouldn't hesitate to check the local wrecking yard. You never know if you might get lucky, or really lucky! My guy has a 30 day warranty I think. Pretty sure you can go all the way from 91 to 99, and even back to 87. Safe bet you would keep the manifolds from 97 to 99. Heck, you might even be able to go 00-01, if your head will swap.
