Default What Lube for 5 speed manual

I have a 96 Cherokee 4.0 HO with 5 speed. Can somebody tell me what lube to use? No owners manual. The original owner drove it 165,000 miles and did almost nothing but oil changes. I'm trying to save it from the scrap heap and use as a woods /farm vehicle. Thanks.

It's supposed to use GL4, which is very hard to find. GL5 is not a good substitute because it contains a lot of sulfur, which is bad on the syncros. The best alternative is Penzoil Syncromesh. I used some in my old 4Runner and it actually improved shift quality over the GL4 I removed. It's about $7 a quart at Advance

Gear oil is best for higher mileage transmissions. I use GL3/GL4.

Natural oils - GL-3 is preferred, GL-4 is acceptable for short-term use. The sulphur-based EP lubes used in GL-5 are antagonistic to yellow metal (bronze,) and will dissolve your synchroniser rings.

There are plenty of "performance synthetic" GL-5 gear lubes, however, that are "safe for use with yellow metal" - check the labels or manufacturer documentation to be certain.
