What is the highest I can go?
Okay guys,
I wanna order my lift kit.... Here is the thing
my jeep will be my daily driver. i will need it to get to school every day(an hour each way) to go to friends and the bar. so i need a stable jeep i dont wanna worry about screwin anything up because my lift is too high w o the right mods. with that said, ill be adding a warn bumper and winch so will that weigh it down? and what is the highest recomended for this type of use. i wanna mud but that other stuff comes first. so ya. is a 4.5 lift too much for that? because i dont wanna regear as i would have no idea what i was doing. thanks guys

Well first you need to think about how much you wanna spend. There is a lot more involved in a 4.5 than a 3-3.5. Just look at the the different kits out there, and notice how many more parts are involved with lifting at 4.5 ie: transfer case drop, longer brake lines, etc. You can daily drive 4.5 with 33's if you want it's just up to you how much you wanna spend and how much work you wanna do.

A 4.5 inch lift with some 31s would be a good set up for your needs. With that lift there may be a need for a SYE to avoid driveline vibrations. The lift heigth does not affect the gearing needs, the tire size does. The stock gears will turn the 31s with very little power or gas mileage loss.

You only need to re-gear for changes in tire size, not vehicle lift. The largest tire most go with stock gears is a 31. You WILL notice a difference in acceleration but will still have a decent amount of power for the needs of DD. Depending on the year, is how high you can lift. The older Jeeps are more forgiving.

If you don't want to regear, you need to stay at about a 31" tire. So 3.5"-4.5" is as high as you'll want go, for now. Plan to do a SYE but you might get away with just a TC drop. Winch and bumper will weight it down, so you may need to add spacers to regain lift lost to the weight.

I mean ideally, I want the ultimate mud rig, but I know that when you hit the trails with your Jeep stuff can break, and the XJ being my only vehicle, I don't have the know how to fix it myself if an axle snaps, and if i mess something up I'm screwed and i can't get to class... So, until I get another car I can't really rag on the Jeep too bad. So that is the position I am in right now.

the amount of lift wont affect your gearing, tire size will. i daily drive mine on 5" of lift and 33s..but im looking for an economy vehicle seeing as i only get around 11mpg.

^x2 a 3inch lift with 30s looks pathetic.i have 3 inch with 31s and it looks ok.if u end up going 4.5 either get 32s or 33s.

Mine is a DD and junior jeeper hauler (two boosters and a car seat). Currently at 4.5 & 33s. I drive a minimum of three hours a day. Yes I would get better MPGs with a smaller tires but drives fine with the 33s.
