Cylinder head

The stock cylinder head is cast iron and weighs 60lb. The valve head diameter is 1.91" intake/1.50" exhaust. Casting numbers are as follows:

Year............Casting No
1987-90......2686
1991-95......7120
1996-99......0630
2000-01......0331
Direct swaps without any additional work, swap casting for casting.

Plug the water temp sending unit, it's not used on 97+ heads.

Build some retainers for the coil packs.

Default 2000 head

I've got a 2000 Cherokee Orvis with the newer intake manifold so I presumed its was the 0331 head, however it doesn't have the coil pack, so I'm wondering if it's the 0630 head

FrankZ,
I am in the process of putting a 97 engine in a 95 XJ. You are right about the temp sending unit. I have a sending unit now with nowhere for it to go, and also no indication of temp on my instrument gage. Do you know if the rear sending unit that goes into the head controls the fan or if it is just for the gage? And if so, I was thinking about tapping out the thermostat housing and putting the sending unit in there. Now I know that this would not indicate temp until the thermostat opened, but it would still be there shortly after running the engine. Let me know what you think.

the unit tells the temp for the fan and gage. and it would be jus as easy to drill n tap the back of the head as it would the thermostat housing and you wouldnt have to run extra wires, and you would know your temp the whole time....just my opinion...whatever you choose good luck.

that is way to much work...why not just get a 96+ thermostat housing from the parts store or the JY and bolt it on and install the sender in there?

I have a 7120 head on my 98 and i Left the little sender in the corner of the head and just put my 98 TH on the 7120 head......

never thought of that. guess if you did it that way you wouldnt have the chance of messing up the head. $10 thermostat housing is alot cheaper than a new head...

But I have the wiring from a 95, so if the fan works off of the rear sending unit, not the thermostat, I have to hook up the rear sending unit to something to get the fan to run. And I would prefer not to drill into the head. What would putting a thermostat housing from a 96+ do for me if I still have the wiring from the 95?

i guess you would only have to drill and tap the therm housing once then.

yeah it should. the fan usually doesnt kick on until 210 degrees + and by then the thermostat will be open. i would jus get a thermostat housing from a 96+ and route the sending unit there if your that weary about drilling and taping the head, but like FrankZ said drillin and tappin is the best way.
