Gonna be going to the mud pit this weekend what gear do you use "D,3,1-2"? Just want to see what others use or recommend.

I would do d then 4 high and hit it with some momentum, but then again I don't know much about mud living here in az.

4lo is only meant for a 25 mph top speed.
4hi is meant for a 55 top speed.
In mud you ALWAYS need momentum and tire speed to get you thru and keep your tires clean.
I would go 4hi and 1-2 and just romp on it

depending on what transfere box you if you have fulltime 4x4 there is not a max speed on 4x4h but this is not the point just take your jeep out and get a feel for it ok you might get stuck once of twice but its the best way to learn what gear suits what conditions

I use 4hi and 3.
He is right, i use D but it bascially works the same. And dont panic and gun it because that will cause the tires to break free of the little grip you had putting you possibley in a worse situation. Drop your tire PSI too if you can(pumping back up is always a pain). that will help a lot!(20 psi will work just fine, dont go much lower) The reason tire speed is needed is because the treads fill up with mud and the only way to get it out so it can grip more mud is to go fast enought to fling it out. Good luck and have some fun! Take some pics for us!Originally Posted by TheJerm
You want the most wheel spin in mud, "when in doubt, throttle out"I use 4hi and 3.

There is no speed limit for 4hi or 4ft. But there is a suggested max shift on the fly speed of 55 mph. By the way NEVER use 4hi or 4lo on the road, it is for off road use only.

My friend use to have a grand with a np231, well he left it 4hi and go on the highway. All of a sudden down the road BAM!!! the t-case blew in half. So moral of the story dont use 4x4 at highway speeds unless you have a np242 with full time while its snowy

if your going 55 you shouldnt need 4WD period.
im just learning my new gears, but id say 4 hi in 3 and romp on it.
