What to else replace along with a new engine?
Ok, so I finally settled on a local builder here for my short block, and am going with a J&C enterprises new head. Here's a running list I've got going to replace when the new engine goes in:
Water Pump (Hesco) All hoses Tube part number 53007978 195º thermostat (any brand?) Radiator (CSF 3 ROW or ChampionCC1193) Antifreeze (Green + Distilled water 50/50) Fan Clutch (OEM HD) Fel-Pro gaskets on All (head, valve, oil pan) Break-in Oil (what brand?) WIX filter ---- front pump seal spark plugs exhaust header (ebay aftermarket?) engine mounts serp belt. Let me know what else I am missing and recommendations on brands, etc. Thanks! |
Freeze plugs? :dunno:
Water pump isn't too complicated. I got whatever Advance Auto gave me. I've heard folks say to get new, not remanned pump. |
Front pump seal if its auto, new clutch kit if standard.

free gdr was talking about the front pump seal in the trans if its an auto, and put a clutch in it if its manual...
spark plugs, exhaust header, engine mounts depending on condition, serp belt. |

I'll be picking up the reman short block, so I think these will both be done on it.

sensors? Less yours are in good shape, especially the oil pressure and temp one(s), also the MAT and MAP are good ones to get new before fire up.

New OEM engine mount brackets to block bolts from dealer.
Part number 6036176AA. MSRP $4.10 each. 6 required. Consider a new OEM water pump and heater return tube from the dealer. Pump Package part number 4626215AD (New part number V9900083). MSRP $100.00. Tube part number 53007978. MSRP $33.45 |

Water Pump (FlowKooler? or other?) Most name-brand rebuilds are OK.
All hoses 195º thermostat (any brand?) OEM Mopar or Superstat Radiator (OEM replacement?) NAPA Antifreeze (Green + Distilled water 50/50) - (Or should I do the Dexcool?) NO Dex - use green + distilled water Fan Clutch (OEM HD) Fel-Pro gaskets on All (head, valve, oil pan) Break-in Oil (what brand?) WIX filter good choice ---- front pump seal spark plugs Champion or NGK exhaust header (ebay aftermarket?) engine mounts serp belt. Replace all three mounts (unless their new) and the header. Stay away from the ATP header. I just installed one on my rig and it was a P.I.T.A! The actuall install wasnt that bad, but the leaking collector due to a bad weld kinda got me pissy!

Why OEM rather than aftermarket high flow style?

I use the higher end NAPA serpentine belts and they seem to last longer than any others I've used.

Why high flow style? I know some people have cooling issues with their xj's at low speeds. I have heard some talk about using a high flow pump to help with this. Do you prefer OEM over high flow? Why? |
