125k vs 200k whats the difference? Either one is just as likely to have mechanical problems as well as looking ratty.

"The engine was warm and had obviously been run before I got there.
Interior is filthy."
Probably a reflection on the condition of rest of the Jeep, caveat emptor. Budget for a new motor just to be safe.

The engine was warm and had obviously been run before I got there. Engine ran smooth. Good oil pressure and temp stayed around 210. Has a few leaks as expected. Trans shifted fine. Could not determine if the head was cracked or not. Has a reese hitch. Pro comp lift. Driver seat base needs replacing. Interior is filthy. No rust. And turns out to have only 205k miles. He mis-spoke because his new car has 13x,xxx miles. Heres a pic:

Run, don't walk, from this XJ.
This particular XJ is a neglected POS whose owner didn't invest a penny into.
Didn't bother to fix a turn signal or window?
Either pay up front for a decent car, or constantly pay to repair a neglected POS that was dirt cheap.
You'll be at $3000-4000 one way or another.

So, if I gave you a choice of 2 used transmissions (or hub bearings, or shocks, or window regulators), one with 125k and the other with 200k, you'd flip a coin since they're identical? LOL.

Like stated, motors for these are a dime a dozen. Biggest thing is rust. If its running decent, no rust and a good price... Jump on it. Lots of fun working on these if you have a smidgen of common sense, and a lot of people here with know-how if you get stuck.

We have been saying this for years now.... Anyway on another note as stated rust free is key.... But what does your friend from work want to do mileage means squat if it has not been maintained

You get some good deals off these guys who don't know that noise is pretty normal.
Ask him if it sounds like a diesel when it's cold and wait for the hemming and hawing.
