Why would you sell it if you have to fix it before you sell? Why wouldn't you just keep it at that point?

What he means is the transfercase crossmember is loose which I highly doubt is the actual problem. But tighten it up just in case.

First thing I would do is pull the front DS and see what happens, if thats not it you are going to have to wait for some more knowledgeable responses.

I thought the jeep wouldnt even drive? If its just vibes you can diagnose the problem yourself on the cheap usually. Again why would you sell it if its still running?

Does the potential owner know that he is buying a vehicle with a potentially faulty tranny?

I thought you were having noticeable problems due to the tranny? Why not keep the XJ and save your money by buying another potentially faulty vehicle.

also (probably going to get flame for this but) for me the xj its just a car,, if it does not satisfy me bye bye it goes.. and I start again,, I always criticize my parents for sticking with cars that were trouble, so at the first sight of trouble bye bye..

and I have always been told that ones a tranny starts asking for money it never ends...

But also consider your options, you are considering buying vehicles that are even older then the XJ and I can guarantee to you that the parts are much less money and much more available for the XJ then for the various other aged vehicles you are looking at. You are mistaking if you think you are going to find a 10+ y/o vehicle for around your price range with no problems. Just to be blunt about things, not trying to sound rude by any means just pointing out reality.

True. If you want a problem-less vehicle, you will have to buy new, or nearly new. The old ones will have your hands greasy all the time. I like that but i dunno if you do. IMO, i would get a second opinion on your transmission other than the one your mechanic gave you. It seems like he's playing doctor saying "i'm sorry, the tranny only has 6 months to live"....you can't predict that. If you spent around $500 on a good used aw4 then you'll have a good running jeep that you know all about instead of some old trooper that could be missing pistons for all we know.

I know what you guys are saying, and I undestand it I can handel having to replace some lines or gaskets or stuff like that, but a transmission is just to much money to spend on,, If I were to fix correctly the tranny Ill have to spend $1500 on a car that I bought for $2000, is does not make sense to spend that much money, more than half the cars worth... also I dont know all about this xj,, I just had it for 2 months max,, so its still a mistery to me for all I know...

any acient (10+ yrs) vehicle is gonna cost around 1/2 it's worth or close to fix, no matter what make or model. The 87 trooper you are interested in is 21 years old. Unless you have a thick wallet, i wouldn't buy a vehicle that old cuz it sure will be needing some fixes, unless the owner treated it like Michael Jordan's rookie card.

Can you find any more aw4 trannies around there? Considering your location, it may be difficult but there has to be some.
