all are 5.7L. The ford or amc motors are the best choice just because the distributor in the front of the motor making its easier to stuff into the XJ's engine bay.
The GM 350 is a 5.7
The Ford 351 is a 5.8
The Chryco/AMC 360 is a 5.9
Had at least one of each and they all have good and bad points. The SBC is cheapest to build, the Ford is next. Something to be said about staying with the same brand but the newer model 360 Magnum motors have junk for heads.

gettin my check the end of this week i have been asking around though and i have heard when you change the front and rear gear ratio that they should not be the exact same........im going to run the dana 44 and ford 9in with 4.56 ratio if that helps any........also when you swap in the 44 front do you need to move the coil buckets or is there any type of difficult modding i should prepare for?????

I had the GM 350 in my 77 half ton chevy that I used as a dd and a mud/beach truck I had edlebrock intake and carb with gm performance heads true dual exhuast with flowmaster 44's and headers and that thing made a TON of power! if i was going to put a v8 in my xj i would use that engine because of the cost and the ease of building it without worrying about a computer I have also owned a 351 (Ford bronco) and a 360 (Ram) both of those were FI so I may be comparing apples to oranges here but my favorite by far was the 350 Chevy

Your gear ratios in your front and rear diffs do need to match.

i know you cant do two different ratios together like 4.10s in the front and 4.56s in the rear....but what im saying is im wanting to run the 4.56s.......should both axles be 4.56 or should one be 4.56 and the other 4.55 or 4.57 or some type of offset?? its just what i have been hearing im not trying to be difficult or anything i just want to be sure when i buy something it is exactly what i need.

i just got a set of 40in groundhawgs..........i found a cheap way to lift the ride.....a guy has a jeep that has a 13in leaf spring suspension lift with 4.56s and a spooled rear end....i think im going to buy it from him for $800......my only question is how hard is it to swap from coil to leaf springs......im thinking you just ****** out the front end and weld the hangers and trac bar to the frame and hook everything up on the new one?????

Prepare for quite a bit of fab work since a Cherokee doesn't have a frame and you will need to plate the unit body to weld to it. I would think a 13" lift leave would look like a U and ride like tank. Out of curiosity what are the leaves out of. Wrangler springs are the right length but the wrong offset and if they are the springs out of the Ford you got the axles from they won't even be close. BTW I run 38s on mine with 7".

the jeep is either a cj or a cj7.......i only have the ford 9in rear it needs shock mounts and spring perches welded on and gears.........i know it would definatly ride like a tank with that much lift but there are some holes out here you hop off in not thinking its deep and it will swallow up a truck with even 6-8 of lift so i figure safe is better than sorry and will save a motor from getting hydrolocked.......and i have always wanted a ride that catches a lot of attention (its more of the last part than the first.)..........about the welding, are you saying i have to drill a plate into (what appears to be) the frame rails and then weld the hangers onto it?

Go 4-6 inches of lift and put a snorkle on that beast, that'll keep your center of gravity down while giving you lots of leeway for water. Nothing draws attention quite like a snorkle. If the snorkle starts sucking water, well, you stopped caring about the motor by that point.

The "frame" is actually sheet metal and isn't strong enough to weld a leaf mount to. You will need to plate it from the front bumper mount roughly where you will mount the leaves to about mid way back. I'd go all the way to the rear. My buddy did his to the mount for the rear leaf and stopped. Guess where the unit body cracked. If the 9" is out of a truck it will be 6-8" wider than your stock axle plus you need a bigger front to run that big of tire. I wouldn't run anything bigger than a 38 on the 9" unless you plan on upgrading the shafts.
