Thats why I'm asking on here before I buy the wrong one. In my 90 xj i never had problems with sensors and it seems like I've had nothing but problems with my sensors in my 97.
I realise this is a very old thread but what I found is the one on the back of the head (on manifold side) is the Guage sender, it is also physically smaller and it has only a single pin socket
On the thermostat housing temp senders have two wires as they send data to the computer BUT they do have two different design sockets and if you do not check by seeing if your new
sender will accept the harness plug you will have to track down the correct one!! Not sure when they changed the socket and plug on the harness ,possibly 1996 on? If you screw in your
new sender into the thermostat housing and leave spanner marks on the brass hex your supplier may not accept it back? Do not ask how I know all this!!
Hope this helps some newbie out there !

my e-fan is straight wired, does that mean i could put a aftermarket sensor there? and leave that unplugged
