what can i do with 3000 bucks?
at $20/ea for Spicer joints, i would replace the ones in your axle shafts, also, if you get a 95 and older without ABS, it would be wise to just pick up new axle shafts with 297x joints out of a 96+
If the U-joints in your front and rear drive shafts seem fine, then just leave them for now..
I would also add to my list, Tie rod ends, and Ball joints. Pretty much spend a grand to buy it, another grand to make it reliable, and another grand to make it fun

95 has the 297 u-joint, it was the year Jeep started using them in the XJ.

that ones a grand cherokee. i wouldnt get a 4.0l grand. go with th3 5.2 or 5.9.
i wouldnt get a roller either. you maybe find a roller in good shape for 500. you can get a running xj thats a little beat for 1000. i think its a lot easier to do a little bodywork than swap in an entire running gear

"I'm looking for a Jeep Cherokee Xj w/ 4wd, 4.0, 5.2, or 5.9 liter (possibly a roller), and an 8.25 rear axle, UNDER 1000 bucks!!
if you are trying to get rid of an xj that fits that description, please email me and send some pics.
BIRMINGHAM AREA, or w/i about 60 miles
thanks"
how does that look for a wanted ad on craigslist?

I agree with the craigslist and ebay route as well. One thing to remember is take your time when looking for your ride. I learned that the hard (i.e. expensive) way when I had my 88 Camaro (3 engines in 2 years, among other things
). Another place to look is towing companies. A lot of them have auctions to sell off cars that they've towed and never got re-clamed.
Another cool thing, especially here, the jeep community is excellent at helping each other out. You'd actually have better luck fixing problems and other how-to's here than in any repair book. It's been a labor of love with my XJ, and hopefully it will be the same for you.
Good luck in your search and welcome !

your best bet is definately to go with the 4.0l inline six. i have the high output 5 speed standard 4.0 and i love it. i can go like 80 in 4th gear
highly recommended. oh and i bought mine with 200,000 on it, still runs perfectly fine. check out some of the mileage threads on here and youll be surprised at some of the miles these guys have on theirs. 4.0 is the way to go. good luck guy
