1992 Cherokee Laredo 4.0 Hi out. 4 wheel drive full time / part time.
what kind of axles and t-case do i have?
and i heard a pop from the front diff when it was locked, now it doesn't lock. completely stock. is the rear is limited slip? it doesn't completely lock up but its not free when its in part time. whats is it and hows it work? haha.
thanks

Your front axle will be a Dana 30, the rear could be a Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25. If the shift pattern on your tcase is 2wd-4Hi-N-4Lo it is a NP231, if it is 2wd-4part time-4full time-N-4Lo then it is a NP242. To check if you have a limited slip rear axle, raise both rear tires off the ground and rotate one tire. If they both turn the same direction it is limited slip, if they turn opposite then it is an open diff.

and i dont know what axels i have. but i do know this. ive been in part time. while only one rear wheel was on the ground, the other one was spinning. it wasnt freely though. it was a slower rate then usual. like it was trying to stay still. the wheel that had traction was pushing also.
Open diffs will apply power to the wheel with the least traction. This is why lockers are so important for off road vehicles. If you get in a position with one front and one rear tire off the ground on opposite corners of your rig, then those two will spin with open diffs and you are basically stuck.

unless you put it in it doesnt have a have a posi as far as i now they never came with the poping you are talking about is proably your transercase popping out of gear it could be your linkage needs to be adjusted mine did that when i first go ti
just a question guys because I dont deal with xj the op's year. Would he still have the vacuum disconect front axle? Because by the way I read it he said it wont lock in at all anymore.
All 92 and up were equipped with non-disco front axles. The tcase linkage would be a good place to start looking. However it is possible if one of the front shafts has broken with a clean break, then an open diff will send power to wheel with least traction. Therefore causing the broken shaft to spin within the housing and suppling no power to the wheel.
