Default what AXLE SHAFT is this ? front passenger side jeep

since the JY didnt have a match shaft to swap 2day, trying to find out what the 1st one I bought is .. since I may be stuck with it

the bottom shaft in photo is the 1 in question .. JY didnt have an answer

the top shaft is from my 1990 xj laredo, 4x4, 4.0 .. from what Ive heard, its a dana 30 w/ vacuum engage (it had the plastic ring also, broke it)

AND .. do these 2 models have the same U-joint? may use the mismatch shaft to get correct joint, and just fix my current 1

thanks in advance.

as you know, the top one is part of your passenger side inner axle shaft. This is a 2 piece shaft, you pulled the outer piece, the inner piece goes from the vac. dsico motor to the carrier. The bottom shaft is probable the drivers side inner shaft for a from D30, goes all the way from hub to carrier.

so .. that may fit my drivers side ?

if so .. I shld do a u-joint fix on this 1 1st ? for practice (speed up things for the broke 1 )

if all good .. replace that side next .. and drivers side hub while at it

does driver side shaft just pullout easy like the pass side?

thanks .. would like to clean up the drivers side asap while I have the routine down

I am quite sure the bottom is a driver side shaft, while the top one is the outer piece of the 2 piece disconnect shaft. My d30 has the same spline count for the passenger side as one piece, going all the way into the carrier, it does not have the disco.

Do both u-joints/hubs at the same time, just be nice to the clips and dont hurt the ears lol. The driver side shaft pulls out easier since it is shorter I am not familiar with the passenger side setup however.

Most people either permenantly lock it where it is engaged or swap the shaft out to a 1 piece shaft out of a non disco axle so it is like 91 and up XJs

easy to get inner disc. axle shaft out? saw plenty of matching (hub) inner long shafts today

if that 1 i bought is the driver side .. was wonderin why there were so many of those & long ones .. and NONE of the outer 2pc axles (which I have to fix)

wld love to bypass vacuum

To get the inner disc axle out you just need a magnet tool , the one that looks like an antenna with a magnet attached.

Just be sure to block off the vaccum nipples if you swap in a one piece axle.

Well after some quick research i guess swaping to a 1 peice long shaft is more involved.

The easiest way to get rid of the vacuum disco is to modify tthe stock unit to stay permenently locked by taking off the disco unit on the axle removing the shift lever, drilling a small hole and adding a bolt and nut to it to keep it permenently locked.

Jp magazine has an article on it if you google it.

As far as the first picture do you mean why are the splines different size? If so i think it is so it it is easier to engage both sections of shaft.

I have only had non disco axles though so i am unsure

Default u joint caps dont match mine

so .. scratching my head again .. do not think it will fit my xj

bought store computer spec'd u-joints (oreilly) ... plan was to do a test run replacing u-joint from this shaft, before I lift mine up & get dirty .. and make sure I have the right part .. to make it quick

none the store had fit this mystery shaft, u-joint cap diameter (that computer said fit my jeep, 90 xj laredo dana 30 vacuum)

this shaft has a bigger diameter u-joint cap

so .. went ahead and did a test removal of joint ..not too bad getting it out

but yea .. way off

the mystery shaft u-jont caps are approx 30mm diameter .. the ones I bought, are 25-26mm .. the best measure I could get off my jeep on both current axles are 25-26mm

i guess $77 spent on this shaft, is a good teaching tool how to remove u-joint .. for when I get into mine .. scrathing head.. Im sure these are worth a few bucks if I knew what they are

and while Im at it .. I bought Master-Pro u joints ... junk? ok? .. or should I get joints with grease fittings ? or sealed more expensive ?

Disco-axles used 260 joints. And the non-disco use 297, I believe. And you can upgrade these to 760 joints.
