What is this?

I was replacing the vacuum lines for my Select-Trac when I saw these rubber tubes near the top of the tranny. Could someone please tell me what they go to? They go up over the top of the tranny and connect somewhere. Where these ends connect to I have no idea.
Also, my 4WD still isn't working. Thanks in advance. |

If so, they should be routed up-and-into the engine compartment by the firewall. :thumbsup: |
I couldnt get my hand up there too far but they felt like they were connected somewhere to the left off the tranny...opposite side of the transfer case. I apologize for the vagueness of my description. Oh and I dont have AC.

Do you have the heavy duty transmission fluid cooling system? If not could be an attempt to run the fluid to a custom radiator.

it looks like your transmission vent tube.
but if your 4wd isn't working, you may have a broken/cracked vac line to engage your front diff, or your vac disconnect motor is rusted or broken. common problem. google posi-lok cable. |
I have a 5 speed manual tranny so no cooling tubes for tranny fluid. And the vacuum tubes to the shift collar/vacuum motor thing are in good condition. I dont know a lot about 4WD. Its likely these tubes pictured go to something regarding the 4WD but I dont know. I will crawl back under my Jeep and see if I can at least get a picture of where those tubes are coming from. I appreciate everybodys input, thanx.

I believe they go to the vacuum control switch on the transfer case. Could be vent lines, one of the lines coming off the transfer case control switch will have a check valve in the end of it.

That line doesnt look like it would be a part of the 4wd system. The 4wd vacuum lines are colored (red - primary vacuum, yellow - 4wd engaged, green - 4wd disengage, and blue - air vent). I'd run out to mine and take a peak, but its 41 degrees outside and gettin colder and supposed to snow. But unless the 87s are that much different than the 89s, I would venture to say its not a part of the 4wd system (also assuming it wasnt some sort of re-engineering done by someone else).

i thought selec trac WAS the 242

Ah, nevermind, i found it, yes selec trac is the NP 242, it's probably wrong, shoud be the command trac NP 231.

Ok, looks like one comes from the top of the transfer case on the passenger side and the other comes from the top of the tranny. Could they just be vent tubes? If so were would they go?
